Jumpstart Your Freelance Writing Career – The Crash Course Edition!

TO EVERY ASPIRING WRITER, LISTEN UP!! If you want to make it in the world of journalism, take note of what I’m about to say.

Writer’s Block Philippines, in partnership with co.lab, is whipping up another workshop for all you dreamers and lovers of the written word. It’s the Crash Course Edition of WBP’s flagship program, Jumpstart Your Freelance Writing Career. Better make sure you cross out this date on your calendar – March 17, Saturday from 9AM-6PM. The class costs Php 2,500 and I assure you, IT. IS. WORTH. IT.

About 10 months ago, I attended this workshop. I was kinda hesitant in joining at first, but I eventually had the balls to do it. So anyway, I LEARNED A LOT. It was amazing, actually. I met a lot of cool people and the workshop just opened up a whole new world for me. If you think I’m bullshitting, read my post on that 2-day workshop experience: http://www.pizzaandbeer.com.ph/2011/05/02/write-and-then-write-some-more/

So yeah, I do encourage every aspiring writer to join this workshop. For people who are scared of dipping their toes into the ‘freelance writing’ business, this is for you. I guarantee, you will NOT regret it.

Here’s a few words I wrote in that blog entry I was talking to you about:

I’d actually recommend this workshop to anybody who wishes to become a writer. I know a lot of people have day jobs and all that crap, but over half of them don’t like what they’re doing and would want to shift to something they’re passionate about. And if you’re passionate about the written word, I dare you to take this class. It’ll ignite your inner flame.

Most things I’ve accomplished in freelance writing, part of that I owe part to Writer’s Block Philippines. So if you’re tired of being an employee and want to dive into freelance writing, get on this class. Remember, it’s never too late to be what you might have been.

In the middle of four..

I haven’t been reading as much as I want to. But recently, I’ve managed to secure a certain period of time each day for the past few days to just bury myself into some good shit. I think we should all find time to read, even just for a few minutes. Reading is fun, and it keeps the mind sane.

Here are some of the books I’m in the middle of right now.

Sam Smith – The Jordan Rules

Stephen Chbosky – The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Shaquille O’neal -Shaq Uncut: My Story

Haruki Murakami – The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles

Will probably start Palahniuk’s Damned and Tina Fey’s Bossypants soon.

Start the year right and go ‘Dreamboarding’ with Writer’s Block Philippines

One of the biggest obstacles in life is setting your own goals and priorities. It’s hard to get things accomplished without setting a clear path to take and we often find ourselves confused and lost in how to achieve our dreams and desires.

To kick-off the year, Writer’s Block Philippines is organizing a Dreamboarding workshop. If you’re familiar with and believe in the Law of Attraction, you probably have an idea of what I’m talking about.

“Dreamboarding” is a three-hour creativity session where participants will be asked to take part in a visualization exercise, make their own dreamboards, and process the contents of their dreamboards to better understand their goals, priorities, and motivations.

This is a powerful manifestation tool that can empower you and serve as a visual reminder to yourself to stay on track with your dream-goals and your deepest desires.

An UNSCRIPTED launch with Sarah Meier and Vicky Herrera

Last December 15, Fully Booked launched UNSCRIPTED, a book from Sarah Meier and Vicky Herrera that’s based on their famed conversations with equally famed personalities.

Both brilliantly talented, Sarah and Vicky are music and fashion pundits in their own right. The duo were famously known for their morning radio show, The Dollhouse, on the now-defunct U92. On that show, they had a segment called “The Real OG” where they interviewed some of the most influential people and talked about some of the lessons learned in their rise to success.

Some notable OGs that were interviewed are Madame Imelda Marcos, rockstar Raimund Marasigan, the witty Lourd de Veyra, Gang Badoy, Tessa Prieto-Valdes, hip-hop group Mastaplann, and PBA legend Jeff Cariaso. All of these inspiring and entertaining conversations were translated into this book.

Sucks balls that I wasn’t able to drop by the launch because of the stoopid CRAZY-ASS traffic. But I’m definitely gonna get a copy of the book. Can’t wait to devour the pages. And can I just blurt out, the cover is FUCKIN’ SICK! I hope there’s gonna be another book signing sometime soon. Been a fan of Sarah Meier since her VJ days on MTV Asia, so a chance to meet her and Vicky Herrera would be fuckin’ awesome.

Unscripted is now available at Fully Booked for Php 998.

Francis Magalona Foundation hopes to turn every Filipino into a hero

A month ago, the Francis Magalona Foundation was launched together with the FMF: Find Meaning in the Filipino Campaign as an invitation to every Filipino to ask themselves the significance of their roots, of their blood – of being a Filipino. And one of their upcoming programs is Born To Be A Hero.

FMF President Pia Magalona shared that “FrancisM always believed that in order for the Filipinos to rise from poverty and other issues that concern the nation, they had to believe in themselves and have a change in mindset that hindered this transformation.”

This is what Born To Be A Hero is all about – transforming your life by believing in yourself, harnessing your inner greatness and ultimately making better decisions for yourself, your family, your community and your country.

The Born To Be A Hero program is based on the best-selling book of the same name by Coach Pia Acevedo of OneCORE Success Center. Coach Pia talks about how you can transform your life by being your own hero. The program helps revolutionize the concept of heroism as any act that calls for you to step out of yourself whether consciously or unconsciously making yourself present to the moment for others and for yourself.

The Born To Be A Hero Talk is scheduled this November 26, 2011, 2-4 PM at the Picasso Boutique Serviced Residences, Makati.

Participation Options

  • Php 500 – learning fee includes your own copy of Born To Be A Hero book (regularly priced at Php295)
  • Php 350 – learning fee only

If you wish to be a part of this program, you can register HERE. For more details about the event, visit francismagalonafoundation.com.

Chuck Palahniuk’s new novel is Damned

This new Palahniuk novel, Damned, seems interesting.

It’s a story about Madison, an eleven year old girl who finds herself in Hell, unsure of why she will be there for all eternity, but tries to make the best of it.

The author described the novel as “if The Shawshank Redemption had a baby by The Lovely Bones and it was raised by Judy Blume.”

And “it’s kind of like The Breakfast Club set in Hell.”

The book is set to be released on October 18. Can’t wait for it to hit local bookstores.
