Coca-Cola partners with PBA to search for Young Stars

We are a hoop nation. Basketball is one of the few things that make us Filipinos happy. Coke is another. With their recent “happiness” campaigns, Coca-Cola has decided to collaborate with the Philippine Basketball Association to shape up an even happier and more eventful future for the Filipino youth of today through the sport of basketball.

The partnership will give birth to Coca-Cola PBA Youngstars, a new exciting league that aims to promote the value of leading a healthy, active lifestyle among Filipino kids. PBA Commissioner Chito Salud and Powerade Team Governor Ronnie Asuncion signed a three-year MOA for the Coca-Cola PBA Youngstars league. Through this program, young Filipinos can showcase their basketball skills and at the same time indulge into a positive lifestyle with fellow hoop lovers.

The tournament officially opened on May 2 and is open to young cagers aged 13 to 16 years old. Try outs are now currently scheduled with an estimated three localities in each region. An estimated 1,500 players this summer will pit against each other and end via a National Finals Game slated May 27, 2012. Players will be coming from all over the Philippines. In the nationals there will be only two teams left from NCR and one each from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

Coca-Cola has always seen the youth as a powerful force and, with the help of this campaign, hopes to create a better future for the kids. And it’s also a way for them to give back to the many Filipinos who have supported the brand in numerous years.

The Jr. NBA Program presented by Alaska returns to the Philippines

The Jr. NBA is back! Early Saturday morning at the Treston International College, Alaska presented the Jr. NBA program for the second consecutive year. The leading youth basketball program will once again promote basketball participation, sportsmanship and teamwork, and an active lifestyle among boys aged 10-14 years old.

This 2012, the Jr. NBA program makes first-time stops in three new cities – Puerto Princesa, Pampanga and Cagayan de Oro - with the help of Alaska, the presenting partner which continues to share the same dedication with the NBA to youth sports development, as stated by Fred Uytengsu.

In addition to that, the schedule will also include Metro Manila, where the Jr. NBA National Training Camp will take place. Part of this year’s program is Coach Marty Conlon, who is a former NBA player and current NBA Manager for International Basketball Operations. Conlon will oversee the program along with local coaches, as well as members of the Alaska Aces coaching staff.

Because of the recent damage caused by typhoons, NBA Cares will also conduct outreach programs to those people affected in Pampanga and Cagayan de Oro, as explained by NBA Asia Country Manager Carlo Singson.

The Jr. NBA 2012 is composed of four stages:

  • Stage 1: Jr. NBA Touring Clinics (mid January to March 2012)
  • Stage 2: Jr. NBA Regional Selection Camps (April 2012)
  • Stage 3: Jr. NBA National Training Camp (May 2012)
  • Stage 4: The NBA experience (later in the year)

Carlo Singson also noted that an NBA legend will hit Manila shores soon, something basketball fans should definitely look forward to.

[Pizza&Beer Contest] What keeps you healthy?

I just suck at making up names for contests, don’t I?

What does it mean to be healthy and fit? There are a lot of ways.

Some people exercise. They walk, join fun runs (also because they think it’s the ‘in’ thing to do), attend zumba classes, go to gyms and do circuit training shit. Some people watch what they eat. They take in more vegetables, cut down on red meat, caffeine, sugar and salt, and down a lot of vitamins. Some people toss out the vices: stop smoking, lessen the alcohol intake. Some people avoid getting stressed out and try to get regular hours of sleep.

And some people, like me, just don’t give a fuck about all that stuff I just mentioned. My meaning of being healthy is laughing at least once a day.

Which leads me to this contest. I am giving out some stuff again. Why? Because it’s healthy for my blog. This time, I am giving away a shirt from The Perfect White Shirt and a Php 1000 gift certificate from 360 Fitness Club.

Mechanics are easy, as usual. You can choose to do either one of the two:

1. Follow me on Twitter (@jcansis) and tweet:

What keeps you healthy? Tell @jcansis your answer for a chance to win a shirt or a Php1000 GC! Details here: http://bit.ly/twoNlK Please RT!

2. Like the ‘Pizza and Beer’ Facebook fan page (facebook.com/PizzaAndBeerBlog). Then post this on YOUR wall:

@Pizza and Beer is giving away a shirt c/o The Perfect White Shirt and a Php 1000 GC c/o 360 Fitness Club. Check this link for details: http://bit.ly/twoNlK

(Don’t forget to tag the ‘Pizza and Beer’ fan page in your post)

LAST INSTRUCTION: After posting on Facebook/Twitter, leave a comment on this blog post below with your answer to the question “What keeps you healthy?” along with your name, the URL link to either your Facebook or Twitter post, and your email address.

This contest is open to Philippine residents ONLY and will end on Sunday November 27, 2011. Any entries received past the deadline will NOT be included.

I will choose two (2) winners and announce them on on Monday, November 28. One winner will get the shirt c/o The Perfect White Shirt and the other will get the Php 1000 GC c/o 360 Fitness Club.

*The prizes will be claimed within Metro Manila.

NBA FIT returns to the Philippines to promote health and wellness

The National Basketball Association (NBA) has announced that NBA FIT will return to the Philippines from July 25-Aug. 7. Due to the success of the last year’s inaugural event, the 2011 Philippines program will see an expanded schedule across Metro Manila.

NBA FIT is the league’s global comprehensive health and wellness program that encourages physical activity and healthy living for children and families through programs and events.

NBA FIT Philippines 2011 is fully endorsed by the Philippines Department of Health (DOH) and will again feature Filipino-American Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra, who led his team to the NBA Finals this season. Spoelstra, an NBA FIT team member and NBA Ambassador of the Philippines, will be assisted by some of his Heat coaching staff, as well as local health and wellness experts and celebrities.

NBA FIT programming will include the following elements during the two-week event:

NBA FIT Clinics – Held at grade schools, high schools, universities, and shopping malls, these interactive health seminars will focus on three keys to a healthier lifestyle — regular physical activity, better daily nutrition, and smart personal health choices. Fans can take part in various health tests, enjoy healthy cooking demonstrations from celebrity chefs and take part in the NBA FIT Challenge, a timed fitness obstacle course with chances to win great NBA prizes.  Participants with the best times from the tour will be eligible to participate in the grand finale of the NBA FIT Clinics at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall on August 6th, 2011. The NBA has set a goal for 10,000 fans to make their own commitment to healthy living by signing an NBA FIT Pledge.

NBA FIT Development Camp – Spoelstra and Heat assistant coaches David Fizdale and Chad Kammerer, will lead a basketball camp for the Energen Philippine Under-16 National Team, which is currently preparing for the FIBA-Asia Under-16 Championships in October. The camp will be hosted by the Araneta Center at the world-famous Araneta Coliseum on August 5, 2011.  Gatorade will conduct advanced hydration “sweat tests” that can help educate and prepare the participants for future competitions.  Spoelstra will also lead a coaching clinic for coaches from the Basketball Federation of the Philippines and from National Capital Region high schools and colleges, who will also be invited to observe the camp.

Celebrity NBA FIT Challenge – Following the NBA FIT Development Camp, 16 celebrities from the entertainment and sports world will be divided into four teams to see who can complete the NBA FIT Challenge in the quickest possible time. The winning team will win autographed prizes for their favorite charity.

NBA FIT Fun Run presented by Air21 – The second annual NBA FIT fun run, co-organized by the NBA and RunRio, the premier race organizer in the Philippines, will be held on August 7, 2011 at the Fort Bonifacio Global City.  Approximately 6,000 runners are expected to participate in the run.  Distances include 3K, 5K, 10K and the newly added 21K.  For registration details, log on to RunRio.com.

Spoelstra and the NBA FIT team will also partner with the Philippine Department of Health and Health Secretary Enrique Ona to promote healthy living among local Filipino youth and to educate them on the dangers of smoking, drugs and excessive alcohol consumption.

Official partners of the NBA FIT Philippines 2011 include Gatorade, Energen, Air21, Head & Shoulders, Alaska Yoghurt, Sanofi-Aventis and Philippine Airlines. Media partners are Basketball TV, Studio 23 and NBA Premium TV. Partners in sport include RunRio, Fitness First, and Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP). Venue partners are SM Malls and the Araneta Center. Community partners endorsing the program include the Department of Health, and the Food and Nutrition Research Institute under the DOST.
